The Pittsburgh Steelers were hoping to see wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster break out with a big-time season in 2020. While he hasn’t had a bad year, he certainly has not been the superstar that many thought he was going to end up being.
Looking ahead to the upcoming NFL offseason, Smith-Schuster is set to hit the free agency market. The Steelers are going to have to make a decision. Do they pay up to keep him or do they let another team swoop in and sign him?
So far this season, Smith-Schuster has caught 82 passes for 670 yards and seven touchdowns. Those aren’t bad numbers, but they aren’t No. 1 wide receiver stats. He has the talent, but has yet to put it all together.
At 24 years old, there is still plenty of time for Smith-Schuster to figure things out. Perhaps a change of scenery could help him.
All of that being said, let’s dive in and take a look at four teams who should look to sign JuJu Smith-Schuster this offseason in free agency.
4. Pittsburgh Steelers
Let’s be real, keeping Smith-Schuster would make a lot of sense for the Steelers. He has yet to become a superstar like he was looking like with Antonio Brown still on the roster. However, he is still a big part of the offense.
Pittsburgh is looking like a legitimate Super Bowl contender this season. They have hit a rough patch of late, but they are still a very good football team.
No matter what the future holds at the quarterback position, the Steelers are going to need wide receivers. Smith-Schuster is still a top two target for any offense and fits nicely with Chase Claypool and the rest of the weapons in Pittsburgh. Keeping him around for a few more years would be a wise choice.
3. Indianapolis Colts
Next up, the Colts are a team to keep a close eye on this coming offseason. They are so close to being Super Bowl contenders, but could use some more firepower. Philip Rivers may stick around for another year or two, but bringing in more talent at wide receiver is a must.
T.Y. Hilton is also set to hit free agency and the Colts will have to decide whether or not to pay him. Even if they do re-sign him, adding JuJu Smith-Schuster would make sense.
An offense featuring Jonathan Taylor, Hilton, and Smith-Schuster would be lethal. Rivers may be in the final stage of his career, but that supporting cast would be the best that he has ever had.
2. Green Bay Packers
Over the last couple of years, rumors have been flying about the Packers needing to find another weapon at wide receiver for Aaron Rodgers. With the veteran superstar quarterback playing like an MVP again this season, Green Bay could look to make a big-time addition.
Can you imagine Davante Adams and Smith-Schuster catching passes from Rodgers? The Packers’ offense would be nearly unstoppable. Smith-Schuster would have a true superstar to play alongside once again.
While drafting a receiver could make more sense for the Packers, signing Smith-Schuster could be a good fit as well. Depending on the price tag, this is something that Green Bay should take a close look at.
1. Philadephia Eagles
Finally, a move within the state of Pennsylvania could be in the future for JuJu Smith-Schuster. The Eagles need help offensively and he could be just that.
Alshon Jeffery and DeSean Jackson have not been able to stay healthy over the last couple of years. J.J. Arcega-Whiteside has not become the player that the Eagles were hoping he would. Jalen Reagor has talent, but he isn’t the clear-cut answer as the No. 1 wideout in Philadelphia.
If the Eagles were to sign Smith-Schuster, Jalen Hurts or Carson Wentz would immediately have a better go-to target. They may choose to go a different direction, but this move would make a lot of sense for both sides.
