The Indianapolis Colts have talent. Despite Andrew Luck retiring right before the season, they managed to go 7-9. The main issue they face is consistency. Last season, they beat some of the NFL’s best teams but lost to some of their worst. After a strong offseason, the Colts are one of the NFL’s best dark horse teams.
Consistency at the quarterback position was a significant issue for the Colts in 2019. Jacoby Brissett had some fantastic games last season. For instance in the 30-23 victory against the Texans Brissett threw four touchdowns and over 300 yards. However, there were games like the season finale against the Jaguars when he completed less than 50 percent of his passes.
Defensive consistency was also an issue. The Colts held the mighty Chiefs offense to a measly 13 points. They also limited the Panthers, Broncos, and Jaguars under 14 points. However, when the faced the Jaguars again the Jags were able to rack up 38 points. The Buccaneers, Raiders, Chargers, Saints, and Titans also surpassed the 30 point threshold. A team simply cannot contend with this much inconsistency.
Those issues were addressed during free agency and the draft. The Colts opted not to sit on their heels and hope the issues could be fixed internally. They went out and were aggressive during free agency. They signed DeForest Buckner and Philip Rivers. When draft day came, they selected a strong running back to complement Marlon Mack.
With that being said, here are four way-to-early reasons the Indianapolis Colts will contend in 2020.
