Receivers and Tight Ends are going to get less production
Not to throw too much criticism at CJ Beathard, but he’s not the most accurate quarterback. He completed 54.9 percent of his passes (31st in the league) on only 224 passes. Add this in with his 2.7 interception percentage, and it shows that the 49ers receiving options will have a hard time getting the ball.
A lot of the targets from Garoppolo’s time as starter gained much of their production from when he was starting. Here are a few to note:
- Marquise Goodwin: the deep threat option put up career-highs with 56 catches and 968 receiving yards last season. 29 of his catches (51.8 percent) and 384 of these yards (39.7 percent) were with Jimmy G.
- George Kittle: the Iowa product put in a strong campaign in his rookie season with 43 catches for 515 yards and two touchdowns. He delivered the best game of his career in the season finale as he became the first 49ers tight end since Vernon Davis in 2013. His quarterback for that game was Garoppolo.
- Trent Taylor: the undersized receiver managed 43 catches for 430 yards. However, his best game came in Garoppolo’s first start as Taylor put up six catches for 92 yards (both career highs).
- Garrett Celek: the veteran tight end option put together one of his best seasons as he put up 336 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Garoppolo was responsible for 188 of the yards (56 percent) and two of the Celek touchdowns.
- Kyle Juszczyk: the Pro Bowl fullback put together 315 receiving yards on the year. But 195 of them (61.9 percent) came from none other than Jimmy GQ.
Some of these players will experience a dip in production with the change in quarterback.
