No. 3: Find Success in the Running Game
The 49ers running backs were unable to get any production against the Vikings last week. Both Matt Breida and Alfred Morris accounted for a total of 84 rushings yards on 23 carries. Together they averaged 3.7 yards per carry.
Worst of all was Morris’ fumble on the Vikings 1-yard line that gave the ball back to Minnesota and negated a Niners scoring opportunity.
These two players need to step up in Week 2 as the two major options in the rushing game. The team’s original starting running back, Jerick McKinnon is out for the season with a knee injury that is affecting the offensive production even further. Most of all, as a receiving option out of the backfield.
The Jets were able to find success against the Lions as their two top running backs, Isaiah Crowell and Bilal Powell, accounted for 162 rushing yards on 22 carries (7.4 yards per carry).
If the duo of Morris and Breida can find this similar success, then the 49ers offense will put some points on the board with relative ease.
