Dante Pettis
As the 49ers’ potential as a team has been going up, Dante Pettis has headed in the opposite direction.
Pettis looked to be a potential top 2 WR for the 49ers by the end of 2018, with 24 catches in the team’s final six games. But that narrative completely changed last year, as Pettis saw himself on the sidelines for the final five games in the regular season and was inactive for the Super Bowl.
With the emergence of Kendrick Bourne last season, the 49ers drafting Brandon Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings and signing Jaron Brown, Pettis is now in a position where he needs to fight for a roster spot. It’s no guarantee he’ll be a part of the 53-man roster for 2020, something neither side would have thought after using a second-round pick on Pettis in 2018.
While his trade value certainly is low, a change of scenery might be best for Pettis. It certainly makes sense to keep him around with the 49ers lacking depth at receiver, but if Pettis isn’t in their plans for the future, they should consider shipping him out for a late-round pick.
