49ers: 3 Takeaways from Week 7 Loss vs. Rams

Kelley L. Cox-USA TODAY Sports

1. The Turnovers are What’s Killing this Team

The 49ers currently have the worst turnover differential in the league with a -15 ratio. I know that we blame one side of the ball for this being a big issue, but it’s on both sides.

Most notably in recent weeks as CJ Beathard has been the starting quarterback. In the former Hawkeye’s last four starts, he’s responsible for eight turnovers that have resulted in points for the opposition. That’s how it’s been for the offense since he was named the starter in relief after Jimmy Garoppolo’s injury.

Even more alarming is the difference in points given up from when Garoppolo was the starter to Beathard’s time as the starter. Only seven points for the opposition off of turnovers in Garoppolo’s time in three weeks. For Beathard, the team has surrendered 57 points in the last four weeks.

Another stat that goes into the turnover differential is the number of takeaways the defense has put together. They’ve only forced three turnovers on the opposing offenses they’ve faced through seven games. The last turnover they forced was in week four against the Chargers.

Even last against the Rams the team found themselves in serious turnover trouble on both sides. The defense failed at intercepting two separate passes, and the offense turned the ball over four times. Each of those turnovers resulted in a score for the Rams offense; 24 points to be exact.

If the 49ers want better results in games, then they need to correct this flaw in their game immediately.
