San Francisco 49ers: 5 Players on the Hot Seat in 2018

The San Francisco 49ers have some key competition battles heating up in 2018 training camp, and a number of returning veterans are on the hot seat this upcoming season. Here are five of them.

A year ago at this time, San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch set to work turning over a roster that had won just two games the previous season. When he was finished, the 2017 Niners had changed out over 70 percent of the roster carried over from 2016.

Following a 6-10 finish last year, Lynch and Co. aren’t quite finished with the massive shakeups. A number of high-profile and even less-known players carried over from the previous regime are still battling for spots on San Francisco’s 53-man roster this upcoming season. Determining who makes the cut will ultimately be decided by training camp, preseason and a number of other factors.

Nevertheless, it’s safe to assume a number of veterans are on the hot seat heading towards the 2018 season.

Many are carryovers from the pre-Lynch era. Others may be 2017 additions that, for one reason or another, are going to be hard-pressed to carve out a niche on the roster this upcoming season. Even if they do, their respective roles will be under scrutiny, putting into question their long-term fits with the team beyond this year.

While there are a plethora of 49ers players on the roster bubble in training camp right now, let’s focus on the five biggest “hot seat” players who’ll need to stand out in a big way to stick around this season.
