No. 5: Wide Receiver Aldrick Robinson
It made sense for the 49ers to bring aboard veteran wide receiver Aldrick Robinson as a free agent back in 2017. After all, Robinson had worked with head coach Kyle Shanahan during their tenure together with the Atlanta Falcons. Robinson understood Shanahan’s complex offense. And as a mentor, he could therefore teach a primarily young crop of Niners receivers all the ins and outs of the system.
But Robinson wasn’t much of a factor on the field last season. In total, he accounted for a mere 19 receptions for 260 yards and a couple of touchdowns. And thanks to the emergence of fellow wideout Marquise Goodwin, Robinson became something of an offensive afterthought.
The Niners stockpiled even more receiving talent during the offseason, namely Washington’s Dante Pettis and Middle Tennessee State’s Richie James.
Both have been impressive in training camp so far, meaning Robinson’s future with the team is in serious doubt.
Robinson will have to do more than just excel in camp and the preseason. He’ll have to flat out beat some of the other well-known names at the position on San Francisco’s roster.
It won’t be easy. And in all likelihood, Robinson won’t make it beyond roster cuts in advance of Week 1.
