Richard Sherman and Ahkello Witherspoon
This is a little bit of cheating. However, the outside cornerbacks will be critical to the success of the 49ers defense if they can shut down the talented receivers that the Lions have.
These two played nearly a perfect game aside from the touchdown pass that Witherspoon gave up to receiver Stefon Diggs. They kept their assignments in check throughout most of the game and should be able to continue that in week two against the pass-happy Lions.
Detroit consists of a receiving trio of Kenny Golladay, Golden Tate, and Marvin Jones Jr. All three of them accounted for 247 of the 300 passing yards from quarterback Matthew Stafford in last week’s game.
If Sherman and Witherspoon can shut down these players, then the 49ers defense will have a severe advantage over the NFC North team.
