49ers: 5 Players Who Should See Increased Roles over Rest of 2018

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

1. Edge Rusher, Dekoda Watson

All it took was one game to show the value of Watson on the defense. After being taken off of injured reserve, the 30-year old provided much-needed energy to the team.

He put together a 1.5-sack performance in the 34-3 win over the Oakland Raiders. His best career performance didn’t go unnoticed as Shanahan praised his efforts.

I thought Dekoda played very well, and I thought it helped a lot. Dekoda has probably got our best speed off the edge. Just coming off the ball fast and he can turn it into power very quickly.

His excellent showing last Thursday was refreshing to a pass rush that was struggling before Thursday Night. His versatility at playing both the SAM linebacker role and the LEO edge position is something that’s needed on this defense.

Watson’s play is essential for the 49ers short-term future during 2018. Now with an edge rusher that can get to the quarterback, this will make it easier on the young and struggling secondary. Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh should give more playing time to the former Seminole.
