3. Wide Receiver, Dante Pettis
It looked as if the rookie receiver would make an immediate impact after his first game where he caught two passes for 61 yards and one touchdown. However, a lot of that has died down since the injury to Garoppolo and with the big play from Marquise Goodwin who Pettis filled in for during that time.
The second-round pick hasn’t recorded a reception since week two against the Lions. A lot of it can be due to the knee injury he suffered in week four that kept him out for four weeks. But he’s still struggled to make the impact that he was expected to have as one of the more prominent pass catchers coming out of the 2018 Draft.
The team can continue to utilize him as a deep threat option. But it would be best to see how he handles the number one receiver role. He has all of the athleticism and skill to dominate at the position. However, it’s about giving him a chance to showcase these talents by targeting him more in the passing game.
The 49ers also need to take advantage of his ability as a return man. He set records in college for punt return touchdowns and can provide the team with a threat on special teams.
Catering to Pettis’ strengths is the best way to get the most out of him.
