Another Seventh Round Steal for the 49ers?
Last season, the 49ers had one of the best rookie groups in the league. One big name a part of that group was seventh-rounder, Adrian Colbert. He excelled as the single high safety when his time came and is now the team’s starting free safety.
John Lynch and company may have not one, but two seventh-round steals in this year’s draft class in Richie James and Julian Taylor.
Julian Taylor showed his value in the first preseason game when he came in at the big end spot and came away with three tackles, one sack, two QB hits, and one tackle for a loss. He is a great option as far as adding depth and being a viable option at the big end spot.
Richie James is an undersized slot receiver that shows talent in many areas. He came away with four catches for 46 yards and a game-winning touchdown against the Cowboys. From his ability as a receiver and play as a rusher, he has the capabilities of being a matchup nightmare if given the chance.
Each of these players has the talent to make big contributions for the 49ers moving forward much like Colbert did. It’s important to get value at every area of the draft like what the 49ers continue to do. But when a team can find starters in the seventh round on a consistent basis is something truly special.
