The San Francisco 49ers have been rumored to have interest in free agent quarterback Tom Brady this offseason. However, that may not actually be the quarterback the team is targeting.
ESPN NFL reporter Dianna Russini spoke out about the situation in a segment on Get Up and stated that she doesn’t think the 49ers have a large amount of interest in Brady. She did say that there is a quarterback that they have a lot of interest in. That quarterback would be Kirk Cousins.
Take a look at the segment for yourself and find out why Cousins and the 49ers could make a lot of sense.
Cousins would be a massive addition for the 49ers. He showed off his full skill-set last season for the Minnesota Vikings and his contract runs out at the end of the 2020 season. It would make sense for San Francisco to pursue him with the relationship that he has with Kyle Shanahan.
Last season with the Vikings, Cousins completed 69.1 percent of his pass attempts for 3,603 yards, 26 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. Those numbers came without star wide receiver Adam Thielen for a good chunk of the season.
At 31 years old now, Cousins would be 32 by the time San Francisco could pursue him. Even with him being an older free agent, the 49ers seem to have their sights set on him.
This will be something to keep an eye on over the next year. Jimmy Garoppolo will likely be given another opportunity to prove that he deserves the long-term starting job in 2020, but Cousins might be too attractive of an option for the 49ers to pass up.
Expect to hear plenty of rumors surrounding the 49ers and Brady this offseason, but even more next offseason with Cousins becoming available.
