49ers GM John Lynch Makes Interesting Trey Lance Trade Comments

The San Francisco 49ers quarterback situation looked like a messy one heading into the offseason. Trey Lance, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and starter heading into the 2022 campaign was injured in Week 2 and sidelined the rest of the season. Jimmy Garoppolo took over for him, but suffered an injury of his own, clearing the way for Brock Purdy.

Mr. Irrelevant in the 2022 NFL Draft blew away all expectations and helped San Francisco into the NFC Championship Game. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury of his own in that game, which clouded his availability going forward.

Luckily for Purdy and the 49ers, the elbow injury didn’t require a full reconstruction. He is currently the leader in the clubhouse according to general manager John Lynch when it comes to being the starter for the upcoming season.

So, this lends the question; what are the 49ers going to do with Lance? The team likes having him on the roster, as they are clearly high on his skill set. If they weren’t they wouldn’t have traded as many assets as they did to select him two years ago in the draft.

However, Lynch didn’t explicitly rule out making a trade centered around Lance. If a good enough offer was presented to the team, they would seriously consider pulling the trigger on a deal as nothing is considered off-limits.

“We like Trey on our team right now,” Lynch told local Bay Area media while at the NFL Annual Meeting. “We always joke, [coach] Kyle [Shanahan] and I, we’d trade each other if someone gave us a good enough deal. So we listen to everything, but we like Trey on our team and we are very excited about the way he is progressing about his opportunity.

“I think he’s chomping at the bit to get out there and get back under center and be healthy again.”

Lance will have the entire offseason to showcase his skill set once again. He will handle a large bulk of the reps along with Sam Darnold, who was signed as a free agent, until Purdy can return to the field. It will be a chance for Lance to not only remind the 49ers what he can do but essentially showcase and audition his talents for other teams around the league.

The job is Purdy’s to lose right now, but a strong showing could get Lance back in the mix. At the very least, it could improve potential trade offers that the team receives from other franchises around the league. There are a number of teams that could show some level of interest in Lance, especially if the 2023 NFL Draft board doesn’t shake out in their favor.
