49ers Make Massive Free Agency Move To Sign Star DT

Coming into the offseason the San Francisco 49ers had very few glaring needs. They had one of the best rosters in the NFL and had Brock Purdy and Josh Johnson not gotten hurt in the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles, who knows how the game would have turned out?

But, if there was one major takeaway from that loss for San Francisco, it was that they needed to bolster the interior of their defensive line. The Eagles continually gashed them with the running game. Given the dominance on the edges, the 49ers were relatively weak, in comparison, on the interior, giving opponents a place to target.

That is no longer going to be the case, as the 49ers made a splash signing early in free agency. They agreed to a four-year, $84 million deal with former Eagle Javon Hargrave. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Hargrave will receive $40 million guaranteed at signing and the deal has been confirmed by agents, Drew Rosenhaus and Ryan Matha.

This is a huge addition for the 49ers, who now have a truly fearsome defensive front. Hargrave is going to be added to the middle of a front seven that already includes reigning Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa and linebackers Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw.

Last season with Philadelphia, Hargrave racked up a career-high 11 sacks and 10 tackles for loss. He added 60 total tackles with 16 quarterback hits, two passes defended, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.

Hargrave is a versatile player that can succeed in any scheme. Earlier in his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he was a run-stuffer and space-eater. With the Eagles, he was able to spread his wings more as a pass rusher. He succeeded at both, giving the 49ers a player that can be deployed in numerous ways.

An already elite 49ers’ defense has gotten that much stronger with the addition of Hargrave. He will take full advantage of teams that are giving too much attention to Bosa and be a game-wrecker from the interior for San Francisco.
