Tight Ends
The San Francisco 49ers drafted George Kittle in the fifth round in the 2017 draft. It did not take long for the Iowa product to turn into one of the top tight ends in the game. Kittle would be enough, but San Francisco made another move to improve the position.
The Niners signed Jordan Reed to a one-year, incentive-laden deal. Reed has not played in the NFL since 2018. He has never played a full season in six years in the league. Reed excelled with Kirk Cousins in Washington. He put up 87 catches and 11 touchdowns in 2015. This is a player that can act as a productive backup to Kittle. Shanahan coached Reed during his rookie season in 2013.
With Kittle leading the way, the Niners will have one of the top tight end groups in 2020. Kittle has eclipsed 85 catches, 1,000 yards, and five touchdowns in each of the last two years. He will eventually sign a massive contract extension with the Niners but for the 2020 season, he will make $2.3 million. The Niners have Kittle on a bargain for one more season.
