Joe Williams
Kyle Shanahan famously convinced John Lynch to put Joe Williams back on their draft board and take him in the fourth round last year.
That decision has so far not paid off. Williams spent his rookie year on injured reserve after a disappointing preseason and, though Shanahan has been impressed with how he has performed in training camp, he struggled to find space to run against the Dallas Cowboys.
Williams found the end zone but the 49ers still opted to sign Alfred Morris, who has previously excelled in Shanahan’s system, after injuries to Jerick McKinnon and Matt Breida.
Morris’ addition seems a clear sign the Niners believe Williams, Raheem Mostert and Jeremy McNichols are expendable.
If Morris thrives again, don’t be surprised if the Niners look to get a late-round pick back for Williams.
