San Francisco 49ers: 5 Preseason Trade Candidates

Joshua Garnett

Joshua Garnett should see preseason action against the Houston Texans having returned to practice following a knee injury.

However, the considerable time the 2016 first-round pick has missed has put him behind Mike Person, who NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco recently described as the leader in the battle for the starting right guard role.

It would inject life into the competition were Garnett to impress in Houston. However, though he dropped 25 pounds to make himself more suited to a zone-blocking scheme, his inexperience in the system means it is far more likely Person or Jonathan Cooper wins the job.

If that proves the case then there figures to be little value in holding on to Garnett. Erik Magnuson, who can play every spot on the line, has greater upside as a reserve.

The 49ers have not hesitated to move on from players from the old regime. Should he fail to win the job, a trade to a gap or power scheme team would make sense.
