49ers Receive Brutal Injury Update On Key Defensive Piece

The San Francisco 49ers kept rolling in Week 5, pushing their record to 3-2 after heading on the road and defeating the Carolina Panthers. It was yet another dominant performance by the team’s defense, who kept their opponent’s offense under 20 points once again.

The 49ers, along with the Dallas Cowboys, are the only teams to do that in every game this season. San Francisco has the No. 1 defense in the NFL in terms of points allowed and yardage allowed, as they have stifled their opponents.

The team certainly needs performances of that level as the offense continues to work out some of the kinks as they transition back to Jimmy Garoppolo as the starter after an offseason of working with and learning the nuances of Trey Lance. However, that defense suffered a potentially major loss in Week 5.

This offseason, one of the points of emphasis was upgrading the secondary. The team did that, signing Charvarius Ward away from the Kansas City Chiefs to pair with Emmanuel Moseley. Unfortunately, Moseley has been lost for the season.

According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Mosely tore his ACL during the team’s big win this week.

The injury looks to have come when Moseley was defending a deep pass attempt from Baker Mayfield that was targeting D.J. Moore. His knee looks to give out on him after he comes down from going up to defend the pass.

With Mosley beings sidelined for the rest of the season, it is a huge blow to the 49ers’ defense. He has been a nearly every down player for them this season as he played in at least 99 percent of the snaps in the first four games of the season.

Jason Verrett is already on IR with a designation to return, which would help a lot with Moseley sidelined for the remainder of the season. Rookie Samuel Womack and second-year Ambry Thomas will likely see their roles increase in the defensive game plan.
