The Dallas Cowboys’ defense sustained a devastating blow on Thursday, as star cornerback Trevon Diggs suffered a torn ACL in practice.
Now, the Cowboys will be left scrambling to try and find a replacement, which is obviously no easy task.
Jason Schandl of FanSided named five cornerbacks Dallas could potentially sign: Bradley Roby, Casey Heyward, Cameron Dantzler, A.J. Green and Darius Phillips.
Roby and Heyward are probably the two most well-known names on the list, although both guys are certainly past their primes at this point.
Not that that should come as much of a surprise. If they were still as effective as they once were, they would be on an NFL roster right now.
Still, the Cowboys may not have much of a choice.
At the very least, Roby is just 31 years old and is coming off of a 2022 campaign in which he played 13 games with the New Orleans Saints and registered 36 tackles, two fumble recoveries and five passes defended. He certainly wasn’t great last year, and he struggled in the 2023 preseason, resulting in the Saints parting ways with him. However, it was only a couple of years ago that Roby was a decent corner, so there is reason to believe he has some juice left in the tank.
Heyward was once a top defensive back, making back-to-back Pro Bowl appearances in 2016 and 2017 while with the Chargers. He was last seen playing for the Atlanta Falcons in 2022, where he played in six games and struggled before having season-ending shoulder surgery.
Now 34 years old, the days of Heyward being an every-down player are probably over, but he may still be able to contribute in some form.
The Cowboys are 2-0 and outscored their opponents 70-10 over the first two weeks. Their defense ranks No. 1 in the NFL, although we will see if that continues in Trevon Diggs’ absence.
