5 Intriguing Stats For Patriots QB Mac Jones Through Two Weeks

I’m not sure a quarterback has ever had bigger shoes to fill than New England Patriots’ signal caller Mac Jones.

Following Tom Brady’s departure at the end of the 2019 campaign, the Patriots decided to sign Cam Newton as a stopgap. The results were lackluster, to say the least, as Newton threw eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions and the Patriots finished 7-9.

Then, with the 15th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, New England took Jones.

Now in his pivotal third season, Jones continues to put forth some mixed results, and Phil Perry of NBCS Boston posted some rather interesting stats for Jones this week.

Like Jones’ traditional stats, those NextGen numbers are also fairly mixed.

On the season overall, Jones leads the league in both completions (66) and attempts (96). That is good for a completion rate of 68.8 percent, which is certainly impressive. However, in spite of completing a whole lot of throws, Jones has totaled just 547 yards and four touchdowns while throwing two interceptions. He owns a modest passer rating of 88.3.

Not exactly Brady numbers.

Most recently, Jones went 31-for-42 with 231 yards, a touchdown and a pick in a 24-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins this past weekend.

The 25-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, actually made the Pro Bowl during his rookie campaign, but it’s not like his stats were fantastic. He recorded 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, completing 67.6 percent of his passes and registering a passer rating of 92.5.

Jones then showed some regression in 2022, finishing with 2,997 yards, 14 touchdowns and 11 picks in 14 games.

To be fair to Mac Jones, the Patriots do lack talent overall, but the jury is still out on whether or not the Jacksonville, Fl. native is actually the franchise’s quarterback of the future.

New England is 0-2 and will take on the New York Jets this coming Sunday.
