2. Andrew Wingard
The Jaguars’ starting safety was having a lot of trouble last week against Tennessee. The Titans really went after him on many deep throws. On two of the four Tannehill touchdowns, Wingard was the safety in help coverage. On another, Wingard was in man coverage on Jonnu Smith.
Wingard must provide better safety help over the top for these young corners. If he cannot, Fitzpatrick and this Dolphins offense could be in for a big game.
While he wasn’t great in coverage last week, Wingard is a very good tackler. He delivers solid blows to opposing receivers and running backs. He has done a good job playing up against the run. Miami hasn’t had much success running the football this season.
If the Dolphins are going to beat Jacksonville this week, it will be through the air. Jacksonville is going to have to be ready for some deep bombs to Parker and Williams. Wingard must be there to provide help over top.
This season has been very interesting for Wingard. Last year he mostly was a reserve and primarily used on special teams. However after an injury to Jarrod Wilson, Wingard is now the starting safety until Wilson returns from IR. He will have a very important role as the Jaguars free safety. The corners are rather young, there will be times they need safety help. Jacksonville can’t keep giving up big plays downfield.
