Matt Patricia, Detroit Lions
The two seasons of Matt Patricia’s tenure with the Detroit Lions have been a struggle. The organization posted a 6-10 record during his first campaign as head coach and regressed by going 3-12-1 in 2019.
The injury to Matthew Stafford clearly had a significant factor in the Lions’ terrible record. He ranked second in touchdown passes and passing yards prior to going down with a season-ending injury. So Patricia isn’t completely to blame for their poor results last season.
The Lions will have Stafford healthy to start next season and were able to add talent in the offseason. While they don’t have the pieces to win the NFC North during the upcoming season, they have more than enough to show considerable improvement.
Simply put, it’s difficult to make a case for keeping Patricia if the Lions don’t win significantly more games considering the circumstances. He could very well need to look around the NFL for his next opportunity after this season.
