Minnesota Vikings
It would be rare for the Minnesota Vikings to need to turn to a backup considering the durability Kirk Cousins has shown in his NFL career. Regardless, it’s important to have a talented backup in case a freak play were to occur and cause Cousins to miss time.
There would be enough supporting cast talent for a reliable backup quarterback to be able to keep the Vikings’ offense afloat in the event of an injury to Cousins. That’s between the impact of Dalvin Cook out of the backfield along with Adam Thielen and Justin Jefferson at wide receiver.
The top projected backup for the Vikings is Sean Mannion and he lacks much for NFL experience, along with their other backup Nate Stanley. That shows they don’t have a pressing need for another backup quarterback, but at least letting Colin Kaepernick outduel one of them would make sense.
It never hurts to at least embrace competition and examine the results. If Kaepernick simply weren’t ready then they wouldn’t need to keep him. The important thing is that they are ensuring the talent at backup quarterback is maximized heading into 2020, regardless of the names.
