Players to Re-Sign
Before I even dive into what new players the Packers should consider splurging on, I think it’s important for Green Bay to bring a few guys back.
Clay Matthews is just about done and has to go. The 33-year old isn’t what he once was and had a few blunders earlier in the year that cost Green Bay a game or two. Unless he’s going to take a huge pay cut and be used more in a situational role, I wouldn’t want him back.
Randall Cobb should experience the same fate. The soon-to-be 30-year old is still pretty versatile and he had a clutch game-winning touchdown in week one, but a lack of elite speed and poor durability have soaked up his value.
Cobb can still be useful in the right setting, but the Packers need speed on their offense. Anyone can do what Cobb does and it’s time Green Bay moved on.
While the Packers do need to keep cutting ties with some aging fan favorites, I think one-year wonders like Bashaud Breeland and Muhammad Wilkerson should be brought back.
Both guys showed well in spurts and were nice fits in a slowly maturing defense. Neither completely repaired their stock in 2018, either, so both could be receptive to another short deal that leads to one more big paycheck.
Jake Ryan, Geronimo Allison, Reggie Gilbert, Jake Kumerow and Justin McCray are all solid depth pieces that could be retained on the cheap as well. Green Bay could move on just fine without them, but at the right price, they’d be solid chemistry guys.
