5 Potential Trades The Steelers Could Consider In NFL Draft

For a long time the Pittsburgh Steelers were not a team that you saw make many moves in free agency. They preferred drafting and developing talent with the rare trade to bring in some veteran help. But, with Omar Khan now leading the way as general manager, Pittsburgh’s way of doing business has changed.

When Kevin Colbert was running the show, you knew what you would get from the Steelers in the offseason. Khan has proven to be more of a wild card, willing to break the franchise norms and upgrade the roster in different ways.

Heading into the 2023 NFL Draft, the Steelers have a few needs on the roster. The offensive line could use some help, specifically at right tackle. The defense could use some long-term options as they are set to rely on a lot of veterans and stopgaps this season. That could lead to the Steelers being active on the trade market.

Over at Behind The Steel Curtain on SB Nation, a few different trade ideas were put together for the Steelers in the 2023 NFL Draft. The first idea is trading the No. 32 overall pick, which is the first pick in the second round this year because the Miami Dolphins were docked their first-rounder for tampering.

If the Steelers address their biggest need at No. 17, whether it be a cornerback or right tackle, they can trade No. 32 to load up on more picks in the middle rounds of the draft to round out the roster. There have also been rumors of the Steelers moving up to select Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter, who has dropped on some boards because of his arrest earlier this year.

In the scenario in which the players atop Pittsburgh’s board are not available when they come on the clock at No. 17, the Steelers could look to trade back. There are always teams making calls looking to wheel and deal and if they can pick up an extra Day 2 pick, it is always appealing.

That scenario could also lead to the Steelers making an ill-fated move up the board. Making a deal with a team ahead of them if a run on cornerbacks or offensive tackles ensues is the lowest-graded deal.

With a large gap between their picks on Day 3, the Steelers could look to trade out of the 4th round to pick up more picks in the 5th and 6th. These are the selections teams use to round out their depth charts with, so if the opportunity presents itself to get a few more bites at the apple, Khan and company could pull the trigger.
