5 reasons the Browns should be concerned about their blowout loss to the Steelers

Baker Mayfield Is Not That Guy

In 2018, the Cleveland Browns selected Baker Mayfield with the 1st overall pick in the draft. He was one of many quarterbacks to be taken in that draft. Others such as Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Josh Rosen and Lamar Jackson were all taken in that first round. The Browns had high expectations for the college walk on as he proved himself to be a gun slinger at Oklahoma.

But, things haven’t panned out for Baker in the NFL. It seemed to some that he was too focused on shooting Progressive commercials or getting an endorsement deal done with a boxer company. In fact, the numbers back it up.

After his impressive rookie season, Baker had a sophomore slump. In 2019, Baker Mayfield finished the season with a completion percentage of 59.4, completing 317 of 534 passes for 3,827 yards, throwing for 22 touchdowns and 21 interceptions. He was 2nd in the league for interceptions and it was obvious that he was showing signs of regression. Fast forward to this season, where he said he was going to focus on being more “humble”, and same result.

Baker Mayfield has yet to prove he can win a game for this team with his arm. He has had many different coaches in his early NFL career and Kevin Stefanski seems to understand him the best. He knows Baker is better as a game manager and that is why, they focus on the rushing attack. I know Nick Chubb is hurt, but Kareem Hunt is good enough to be a starter in this league.

“The Cleveland Browns are 7-1 with Baker Mayfield when they throw 26 or fewer times and he manages the offense.” Fox Sports Radio analyst Colin Cowherd explained in one of his shows that the Browns cannot rely on Baker to win games with his arm.
