The Cleveland Browns Secondary Is Struggling
The Cleveland Browns backend is mightily struggling. They have sustained injuries to some key guys on the back end, but this secondary does no favors for this Cleveland offense. When your quarterback is struggling, the last thing you can do, is allow the other team to continually move the ball up and down the field.
The Browns like to establish the run and control the clock. They rely on their defensive front to apply pressure and create turnovers. While Myles Garrett has been great on the year, it seems like he is the only positive thing about this defense. Garrett — an early defensive player of the year candidate — has the second most sacks in the NFL (7.0), only trailing Aaron Donald.
The Browns are missing young cornerback, Greedy Williams, who they had high hopes for. He has been placed on the IR with an unexpected return date.
The rest of the secondary has really struggled on the year. The Browns currently have the third worst scoring defense in the NFL, allowing 31.2 points per game. In yesterday’s loss to the Steelers, they allowed 38 points. The Browns also rank in the bottom half of yards per game through the air, as they currently allow 271.7 passing yards per game.
Against the Steelers, they allowed under 200 receiving yards. That was primarily because Pittsburgh was starting off in a great field position as a result of Mayfield’s interceptions.
This Browns secondary is going to be a problem moving forward. Defense wins championships and this team is far from playing championship style defense.
