5 Reasons the Denver Broncos Are AFC Contenders

Underrated offensive weaponry

In order for Case Keenum to duplicate the success he had last season in Minnesota, he needs an offensive arsenal that can be just as explosive. Minnesota had talented receivers in Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen, along with a rushing attack that made the offense balanced.

It may not seem like it the Broncos have that same type of arsenal. During the past three years of bad quarterback play, Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas have been productive. Both had 1,000-yard seasons in back to back years before 2017.

A new wrinkle in the Broncos’ offense this season will come from their third-round pick, running back Royce Freeman. The running back out of Oregon was very explosive in college and is looking to do the same in the NFL.

Freeman is a bigger running back than Devontae Booker and will be the running back who gets the goal line carries for the Broncos. Also, Freeman has the speed, quickness, and catching ability to be a serious threat coming out the backfield on passing plays.

Rookie Courtland Sutton who Denver drafted in the second round can help Keenum exploit defenses when the Broncos go to three wide receiver sets. Sutton at 6-foot-4, Thomas at 6-foot-3, and Sanders working the slot is a difficult cover for any defense to handle. The key for this Broncos’ offense is to have balance and long scoring drives to help keep their defense fresh.
