5. Damon Arnette, Las Vegas Raiders
There are always some surprising selections on draft night, but none were bigger in 2020 than the Raiders taking Arnette at 19th overall. Analysts valued the Ohio St. product as a second-round to early third-round selection, but the Raiders felt differently.
Las Vegas drafted Arnette with two other future first-round corners, Jeff Gladney and Noah Igbinoghene, still on the board. Several other cornerbacks who could see starting time this coming season, such as Trevon Diggs, Kristian Fulton, and Jaylon Johnson, fell to the second-round.
The Raiders reached for Arnette, especially when they could’ve traded back and still gotten him in the second-round. Now, Arnette faces hefty expectations on a team in serious need of direction.
The Atlanta Falcons also took a risk when they drafted Clemson’s A.J. Terrell with the 16th overall pick.
Terrell is a qualified prospect who helped the Tigers reach two National Championship games. However, the Falcons selected Terrell at least ten picks higher than his projected draft value.
While the Clemson product should experience success in the NFL, this is a team reaching to fill a need. Atlanta wanted Florida’s C.J. Henderson and decided to take Terrell after Henderson heard his name called in the top ten picks.
