The Green Bay Packers have some big decisions to make this offseason. The talk of the football world has been the future of Aaron Rodgers and what the team will do at the quarterback position. After that, the front office can start getting to work on upgrading the rest of the roster.
After going a disappointing 8-9 in 2022, there is some work to do with the roster. The team’s defense fell short of expectations and the offense was middle of the pack as well. Adding some talent to both sides of the ball will help get Green Bay back on track and these five players could do the trick.
Offensively, their biggest need is to find a difference-maker at wide receiver. The passing offense was unable to make up for the loss of Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling. A low-risk, high-reward signing, depending on the amount of money he signs for, is Michael Thomas.
There isn’t a wide receiver available this offseason that has his resume as Thomas was the best wide receiver in the NFL in 2019 before injuries derailed his career. He would be a good complement to Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs heading into Year 2.
Another target offensively could be tight end, Dalton Schultz. With Robert Tonyan, Marcedes Lewis and Tyler Davis all hitting free agency, there could be a huge void at the tight end position. In need of pass-catching weapons, Schultz would be a nice addition to the offense.
On defense, the Packers could use some pass-rushing help. Rashan Gary is recovering from a torn ACL, leaving Preston Smith as the only true pass rusher on the defense. Jadeveon Clowney or Zach Allen would both be good targets.
Not only do both players rush the passer, but both excel against the run. Green Bay was abysmal when attempting to stop their opponents from running the ball last season, ranking 26th in rushing yards allowed.
Last but not least, adding some insurance to the back end of the secondary would be a good idea. With Adrian Amos and Rudy Ford hitting free agency, the Packers could opt to go a little younger at the position and pair someone such as Juan Thornhill with Darnell Savage Jr.
Thornhill is coming off a Super Bowl-winning season with the Kansas City Chiefs and was a steady player at the safety position. He started 16 games in the regular season and all three postseason games, putting together one of the best seasons of his career right in time for free agency.
