5 storylines to watch during Week 3 of the 2020 NFL season

5. Can Josh Allen Continue Brilliance vs. Rams?

The big, glaring question mark around Josh Allen’s game has been the same throughout his career. It was lingering over his head in college, it followed him through his first two years of his pro career, and persisted through an offseason where the Bills’ roster looked ready to make a deep playoff run— so long as Josh Allen could figure out that one obvious issue: Accuracy.

Two weeks into the regular season, so far so good for the Bills’ quarterback. This new and improved form of Allen, the one completing over 70% of his throws through two weeks, has been a revelation for the Buffalo offense. Through 16 games in 2019, the Bills managed to score 27 or more points only three times. In two games in 2020, they’ve already done it twice. It’s a similar story for yards, only three regular-season games over 400 yards in 2019, and already two in 2020.

Much of that success comes back to what Allen has been able to do in the passing game. He’s been limiting his overthrows, taking what the defense gives him, and finding the endzone at a rate that’s on pace to shatter his career-best. Suddenly, that shaky quarterback who’s never finished in the top 20 in either yards, touchdowns, or completion percentage, is suddenly in the top ten for all three categories; and is leading the league in passing yards.

So far, however, Allen has had the luxury of picking apart some more inexperienced and less talented NFL defenses, a luxury he won’t have in Week 3 when his team takes on the Los Angeles Rams. With Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey highlighting a talented cast of Rams’ defenders who have been playing great in 2020, Week 3 could mark a major point in the road for Allen.

Either the Bills’ quarterback will falter under the pressure, and revert back to his inaccurate, mistake-prone ways. Or, he’ll overcome his greatest challenge of the young 2020 season, continue his high-level play, and put his name in the hat as a serious MVP candidate.
