The New England Patriots are heading into what could be a franchise-altering offseason. Tom Brady is long gone and now it appears they could be looking to trade star cornerback Stephon Gilmore. If that is the case, there will be a ton of teams with interest in trading for him.
Gilmore was the best cornerback in the NFL two years ago and put together a decent 2020 season, although his numbers weren’t great.
During this past season, Gilmore racked up 37 total tackles, a forced fumble, an interception, and three defended passes in 11 games. In 2019, he recorded 53 total tackles, one fumble recovery, six interceptions, two defensive touchdowns, and 20 defended passes.
There is no question that Gilmore can completely change the look of a defense. He is a shutdown corner who can take away an opposing teams best wide receiver.
All of that being said, there have been five teams named as potential trade destinations for Stephon Gilmore. CBS Sports named the Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, New York Giants, and Green Bay Packers as potential destinations for Gilmore this offseason.
Any of those teams would improve a ton by trading for Gilmore. The most interesting teams, of course, are the Packers and Browns, who could boost their Super Bowl chances by trading for him.
Gilmore is 30 years old and still in the prime of his career. He may be close to starting to decline, but no one should shy away from trading for him.
It will be interesting to see what teams are the most aggressive in trade discussions for Gilmore. New England may change their mind about trading him, but at this point it seems likely he will be shipped out of town.
Expect to hear more rumors about Stephon Gilmore with the NFL offseason close to getting underway. For now, these five teams are franchises to keep an eye on in trade talks.
