Oakland Raiders
The unenviable battle for sixth place came down to the then-Oakland Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars. Since 2005, Jacksonville has made the playoffs three times, but the Raiders only have one playoff appearance during that time. The Raiders also suffered from greater instability at quarterback.
Oakland owned the 23rd overall pick in 2005. Instead of choosing Rodgers, who found himself plummeting down the draft board, the Raiders selected Nebraska’s Fabian Washington. Washington spent three years in Oakland before the franchise traded him for a fourth-round pick.
The Raiders knew they needed a quarterback, but the franchise still passed on Aaron Rodgers. Kerry Collins joined Oakland in 2004 and took over the starting role. That year, he led the NFL with 20 interceptions thrown. In 2005, Collins played his final season with Oakland, completing 53.5% of his pass attempts.
Despite their quarterback situation, the Raiders waited until the third-round to draft a passer in 2005. The franchise selected Andrew Walter from Arizona St. In three seasons with the team, Walter started nine games, throwing three touchdowns and 16 interceptions.
After passing on Rodgers, Oakland drafted LSU’s JaMarcus Russell with the first overall pick in 2007. Today, fans remember Russell as one of the worst busts in NFL history.
Derek Carr finally brought stability to the quarterback position when he joined the Raiders in 2014. However, the team’s 12-4 season in 2016 remains the franchise’s only winning season since 2002.
