Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers are set to take on the Minnesota Vikings to begin their 2020 season. It has been a crazy offseason for the Packers, who ended up finishing the 2019 season with a 13-3 record and a trip to the NFC Championship Game. They lost to the San Francisco 49ers in that game, but it gave the fans reason for major excitement.
While the Packers didn’t make any major additions to the roster this offseason, they still believe they can compete for a Super Bowl. It will take a few players stepping up and breaking out with a big year, but it’s possible.
Rodgers was happy to supply one potential breakout candidate when asked the question. The player won’t necessarily be the guy that most would expect.
“One guy in particular that came back… Jamaal Williams came back and had a little bit something different this year. I think Jamaal has had a fantastic camp.”
Williams was an X-Factor for the Packers’ offense last season. He plays behind Aaron Jones, but he came in and performed well when Matt LaFleur called his number.
During the 2019 season with Green Bay, Williams ended up carrying the football 107 times for 460 yards and a touchdown. He also caught 39 passes for 253 yards and five touchdowns.
However, there are some factors that could temper expectations for Williams in 2020. Jones is still the starting running back and the Packers also drafted A.J. Dillon in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Green Bay will try to get all three of the backs involved this season.
Green Bay should also be hoping that one of their young wide receivers ends up breaking out with a big season. Allen Lazard, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Equanimeous St. Brown all need to step up.
All of that being said, it will be interesting to see what Jamaal Williams has in store for the Packers. He will be given some opportunities and obviously Aaron Rodgers is a big fan of what he saw in training camp.
