Atlanta Falcons’ Coach Reveals Bold Plans For RB Bijan Robinson

Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson opened a lot of eyes during his rookie campaign last season, even drawing comparisons to Barry Sanders.

The University of Texas standout played in every game and racked up 976 yards and four touchdowns on the ground in 2023, averaging 4.6 yards per carry. In addition, he hauled in 58 receptions for 487 yards and four scores.

Robinson’s versatility is probably his biggest selling point, and new Falcons head coach Raheem Morris understands that.

That’s why Morris does not want to place Robinson into any sort of box heading into 2024. He just wants to put him in a position to make plays.

“In the simplest form you can possibly make it, just get the ball to Bijan as much as you can in as many ideal situations as you possibly can,” Morris said, via Josh Kendall of The Athletic. “He’s so talented; you don’t want to limit the things he can do, but at the same time, you don’t want to water it down so much that there’s nothing he can do great. He can do so many things that you can get overwhelmed sometimes as a play caller or play designer.”

Atlanta selected Robinson with the eighth overall pick of the NFL Draft last spring.

Bijan Robinson Will Be Crucial to Falcons’ Success In 2023

The Falcons actually don’t have a ton of weapons on offense, which makes Robinson’s play that much more vital for the club this coming season.

Atlanta signed quarterback Kirk Cousins in free agency, so that in and of itself will absolutely improve the offense. However, the Falcons don’t really have a deep receiving corps. It’s basically Drake London and then a bunch of unproven talent behind him. There is tight end Kyle Pitts, but then not much else.

That means Robinson may have to be the focal point of the offense in 2024, much like how Christian McCaffrey was with the San Francisco 49ers last year. Robinson himself even said he views himself as a McCaffrey type, something that Morris was entirely fine with.

“There’s something about that youthful arrogance that excites me,” Morris said. “I absolutely love that.”

Of course, those are pretty lofty expectations. McCaffrey led the NFL with 1,459 rushing yards in 2023 and also paced the league in yards from scrimmage (2,023) and total touchdowns (21). Plus, he averaged a robust 5.4 yards per carry.

If Bijan Robinson can be anything close to McCaffrey next season, the Falcons will be in great shape in a very winnable NFC South division.
