The Baltimore Ravens ultimately stood pat before the NFL trade deadline earlier this week, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t try to make any moves.
According to Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic, the Ravens made a play for edge rusher Chase Young but were not able to “push it over the finish line.”
The Washington Commanders ended up trading Young to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2024 third-round draft pick.
Zrebiec added that acquiring Young would have been the only deal that truly made sense for Baltimore. Even though the Ravens lead the NFL with 29 sacks going into Week 9, Zrebiec says that bringing in Young would have made the club less reliant on scheme, stunts and blitzes.
Young, who played his collegiate football at Ohio State, was originally selected by Washington with the second overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.
He burst on to the scene during his rookie campaign, finishing with 44 tackles and 7.5 sacks en route to making a Pro Bowl appearance.
However, the following year, Young tore his ACL nine games into the season and was only able to play in three games in 2022 due to his recovery and other issues. Between 2021 and 2022, Young was only able to tally 1.5 sacks.
The 24-year-old then went on to miss Week 1 earlier this year as a result of a stinger he sustained in preseason. He returned in Week 2 and has actually seen quite a resurgence since, logging 15 tackles and five sacks over his first seven games.
Young certainly would have been an interesting addition for the Ravens and would have made the NFL’s top-ranked defense that much more formidable.
But, for whatever reason, it wasn’t meant to be.
Young will hit free agency this offseason, so maybe Baltimore can take another stab at landing him then.
The Ravens are 6-2 and will battle the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
