The Chicago Bears were one team that a lot of people were keeping an eye on coming into the 2024 NFL offseason. Despite finishing the season relatively strong, especially when compared to how things started, rumors swirled about potential changes that could be made.

One decision was what to do with their head coach, Matt Eberflus. There were reports that he was on the hot seat heading into the team’s Week 5 matchup against the Washington Commanders. 0-4 with some ugly losses, Eberflus reportedly needed a win to keep his job.

His players responded as the Bears dominated the Commanders, 40-20. After starting 0-4, the Bears went 7-6 to finish out the season. With a few breaks here and there, such as avoiding historic late-game meltdowns, Chicago would have been in the playoffs.

Of course, everyone can play the hypothetical game to try and save their job. At the end of the day, you are what your record says you are. For the Bears under Eberflus, their record indicates that they haven’t been a very good team.

Eberflus is 10-24 in his two seasons as head coach and was on the hot seat. But, the improvement showed during the second half of the season was enough for him to keep his job, for now.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Eberflus will remain the head coach of the Bears and return for the 2024 season. Plenty of meetings were had on Monday and Tuesday and it was decided this is the best course of action for the franchise moving forward.

While this is a move that will surprise some people, it was clear that the players in the locker room were responding still to Eberflus. If he had lost the locker room, they wouldn’t have been playing so hard for him when they knew his job was on the line.

NFL News & Rumors: Matt Eberflus & Chicago Bears Updates

Since Eberflus took over the play calling on defense, the team’s performance turned around. He will be looking to carry that positive momentum into the 2024 season, and now attention will turn to the quarterback position.

Will Eberflus have Justin Fields as his starter again in 2024? Or will the Bears use the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on one of the top quarterback prospects? That is the next big decision they will make as that choice will impact the franchise for years to come.
