What Should Be Expected From David Montgomery In 2020?
Quite simply, the Bears should be expecting very similar numbers from Montgomery in 2020. He should improve slightly, but he isn’t going to become an elite star in just one offseason.
Chicago will be able to rely heavily on Montgomery when they need to run the football. However, until their passing game improves, defense are going to be able to focus on shutting down the Bears’ running game. Either Mitchell Trubisky or Nick Foles must step up and play at a high level in 2020.
ESPN has released their league-wide projections for the 2020 NFL season and they have Montgomery taking a step forward and backward at the same time. At this point in time, they are projecting the second-year running back to rack up 853 yards and six touchdowns on 213 carries.
Obviously, that would mean that the Bears don’t give Montgomery the football as much as they did last season. He would improve his yardage slightly and also improve as a receiver by their projections with 26 receptions for 217 yards and a score.
While those projections are reasonable, we’ll say that Montgomery will finish the season with 230 carries for 920 yards and eight touchdowns. He will also catch 25 passes for 200 yards and a touchdown.
Montgomery should have a solid second season with the Bears. His numbers aren’t going to scream “future superstar,” but they will provide the Chicago offense with the running threat they need.
