After a surprising Week 1 win over the Indianapolis Colts, the Jacksonville Jaguars have lost five in a row with losses by at least 16 points in three of the last four. A 34-16 loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 6 makes it worth wondering when or if quarterback Gardner Minshew could be benched.
Head coach Doug Marrone addressed the question, saying he did not consider making a quarterback change against the Lions. But as for down the road, via Michael DiRocco of ESPN, Marrone did not rule it out.
“Maybe in the future, I think,” Marrone said. “I mean, I’d be naïve not to say [that’s a possibility]. That’s up for any position, any play that we can do for ourselves to get better.”
Minshew threw for 243 yards against the Lions, completing 25 of 44 passes with two total touchdowns (one passing, one rushing), an interception and a lost fumble. He has at least 40 pass attempts in all five games of the Jaguars losing streak, which has fueled some fantasy production (QB13 from Week 2-6, QB14 through six weeks). But as DiRocco cited, five of Minshew’s eight touchdown passes since Week 1 have come with the team down double-digits. He has eight turnovers with 13 sacks taken over the last five games.
Could Gardner Minshew really be benched?
Minshew may be keeping the seat warm for a quarterback Jacksonville will draft next April (Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, etc). That said, the Jaguars committed to him for this year with their depth chart decisions during the offseason. Trading Nick Foles was the start, but trade for or sign Andy Dalton? Nope. Sign Cam Newton? Nope. Who did they sign?
Mike Glennon.
Glennon’s most notable career accomplishment is fleecing the Chicago Bears for a big contract, then being replaced by a rookie Mitch Trubisky after four games in 2017. He did start 13 games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a rookie in 2013, and actually played reasonably well (19 TD, 9 INT).
Minshew is not a great quarterback, and he seems headed for a Ryan Fitzpatrick-like career as a journeyman. But the Jaguars embraced the good and the bad that could come by clearing the way for him to start this year, and he at least makes them interesting.
Marrone acknowledged an in-game quarterback switch may be coming, and it will probably be warranted. But if Minshew is benched and Glennon then makes multiple starts, the Jaguars will be in one of the worst spots possible. They will be bad, as expected all along this year, and boring.
