No. 1: Quarterback Andy Dalton vs. Ravens Pass Defense
Historically speaking, Andy Dalton has never fared well against the Ravens. Over the course of his career, Dalton owns a 7-6 record but has thrown 17 interceptions against Baltimore (the most out of any team in the AFC North), has a completion percentage of 57.02 and a passer rating of 74.1 — also both the lowest of all three divisional opponents.
Cincinnati’s offensive line concerns highlight Dalton’s prospects for an effective showdown Thursday night too, as his woes under pressure have already been noted.
The Ravens have already picked up six sacks on the young season. And while Buffalo’s offensive line might be viewed as the worst in the NFL entering 2018, the Bengals’ own O-line is suspect as well.
That could spell a tough day for Dalton.
On top of that, the Ravens secondary was ranked by Pro Football Focus as the No. 4 defensive backfield entering 2018. So even if Baltimore’s pass rush isn’t getting home, the secondary is more than adequate to provide blanket coverage against the Bengals passing attack.
If Dalton is smart, he’ll use Joe Mixon as an extension of the passing game. Mixon’s ability to act as a pass catcher should open things up down field. And even the mere thought of a safety valve close to the line of scrimmage should help out Cincy’s offense.
Should that work, the Bengals might get off to a nice 2-0 start after this prime-time bout, taking an early lead of the AFC North after Week 2.
The Bengals and Ravens kick off on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 8:20 p.m. ET.
