No. 2: Questionable O-Line Depth
Attrition along any team’s offensive line can be disastrous. Teams prepare for this as best as they can, holding onto a swing tackle to back up either position on the outside and preferably having at least two interior linemen to back up the guard and center spots.
One of the best position battles to watch between now and the regular season is between Russell Bodine and Ryan Groy at center.
Bodine, the fifth-year center, has yet to miss a regular-season game at the NFL level. According to Pro Football Focus, Groy might be the better option at the position, as he posted a 71.7 overall grade last season, compared to 66.3 overall from Bodine. But Bodine is far more rounded a player, as Groy wasn’t particularly great in his limited pass-protection snaps last season.
Plus, follow the money. Bodine is set to make $5 million over the next two years. He’ll get the starting nod.
That right there showcases the concern. Buffalo doesn’t exactly have a lot of quality depth with experience. Behind presumed interior starters Bodine, Vladimir Ducasse and John Miller, Buffalo is hoping to get Groy to emerge as a key reserve option. Same with the rookie, Wyatt Teller, who was picked up in Round 5 of this year’s NFL Draft.
Veteran free-agent pickup, Marshall Newhouse, hopefully will be adequate enough to occupy the swing tackle role. But he’ll turn 30 years old early in the regular season. But with a history of injuries and coming off a lowly 57.9 PFF overall grade last year, the Bills probably would prefer to see him not take meaningful snaps this season.
