Broncos’ Justin Simmons to sign tender, still working on contract extension

The Denver Broncos will look to have an improved 2020 season after making some intriguing additions to their roster. One player that will play a pivotal role for the defense is Justin Simmons.

Simmons has emerged as one of the most impact safeties in the NFL. The 2019 season was the final year of his previous contract and the Broncos used their franchise tag designation to retain him for at least the upcoming season.

According to Ryan O’Halloran of the Denver Post, Simmons intends to sign his franchise within the next few days. The deadline for a contract extension is on Wednesday and both sides are still working to reach an agreement.

It remains to be seen whether the Broncos and Simmons will end up reaching an agreement ahead of the deadline. Regardless, he appears ready to play on the franchise tag by signing the tender. Both sides could reconvene next offseason and get a deal done then.

Since Vic Fangio has taken over the defense, Simmons has flourished. Whether it’s been a requirement to get downhill and make his presence felt in stopping the run or making plays in pass coverage, the Broncos safety has played a pivotal role.

Justin Simmons is coming off an impressive 2019 season with totals of 93 combined tackles (two for loss), four interceptions, and 15 passes defensed. He was also graded as being the second-best safety by Pro Football Focus.
