No. 3: Take Advantage of the Jarvis Landry vs. Tavon Young Matchup
Effectively winning football games is about finding favorable matchups and exploiting them. Unfortunately for Cleveland, there aren’t too many against the Ravens that are totally one-sided.
But there’s one Hue Jackson, Baker Mayfield and Co. should pay particular attention to.
Speaking of 11 personnel, which would play into the idea of play action, the Browns going three wide would put wide receiver Jarvis Landry in the slot. Landry would then wind up being the primary assignment for Ravens nickel cornerback Tavon Young, who has allowed 10 receptions on 13 targets for two touchdowns on the season, per Pro Football Focus. And opposing quarterbacks are posting a 147.8 passer rating when targeting Young.
So it’s only beneficial for Cleveland that Young will be primarily lined up opposite Mayfield’s best receiving weapon, Landry.
Mayfield has yet to show he can be effective tossing outside the numbers. But with Landry primarily running his routes in the middle of the field and within the seams, exploiting this particular matchup would be a prime way the young quarterback can find some seams within Baltimore’s excellent pass defense.
None of this is a prediction piece, of course. Based off what the Ravens have done to passing games thus far in 2018, one would wisely predict Mayfield struggles and the Browns lose.
But if Mayfield pulls out a win and bounces back strong, this would be a solid blueprint how.
