The Browns’ Offense Possesses Great Balance
It was more apparent than ever against the Jets that the Browns have a balanced offense. Much of the credit goes to Baker Mayfield, who spread the ball around to five different receivers during his half-plus on the field.
The biggest beneficiary was wide receiver Jarvis Landry, who was traded to the Browns in March after establishing himself as one of the league’s top wideouts during his four years with the Miami Dolphins. He finished Thursday night’s game with eight catches for 103 yards and was targeted a team-high 15 times.
But Cleveland also had its best rushing performance of the season against New York. Fifth-year running back Carlos Hyde celebrated his 28th birthday — and the birth of his son either during or after the game — with 98 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. It was by far his best performance in a Browns uniform, and his play certainly took some pressure off his rookie quarterback.
Mayfield also has the ability to tuck it and run, although he didn’t do so much on Thursday night. But he finished his college career with over 1,000 rushing yards, so teams will have to game plan for that as well.
With the likes of Landry, Hyde and Mayfield leading the way on offense, Cleveland should continue to put up impressive numbers on that side of the ball as the season progresses.
