Browns Reveal Major Nick Chubb Injury Update – Week 10

The Cleveland Browns’ offense took a major hit when star running back Nick Chubb went down with a knee injury against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2. He was the main cog in their offensive attack and without him, they have struggled at times to get things going.

Chubb’s injury was of the season-ending variety, as he injured his MCL and ACL. He underwent surgery to fix the MCL already, but Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski did provide an update on his status.

The ACL surgery is expected to be done soon, as a few weeks were needed to wait in between. “He’s here today and doing well,” Stefanski said, noting that he doesn’t know when the ACL surgery will be taking place.

Chubb isn’t going to have or even attempt a miraculous comeback such as the one New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is on a mission to do with his Achilles injury. But, it is certainly encouraging to hear that he is doing well and back at the Browns facility.

What some people hypothesized could be a career-ending injury, Chubb is expected to return to play at some point in 2024. But, the Browns have quite a dilemma on their hands as he carries a $16 million cap hit for 2024, which is the third highest among running backs in the NFL.

Given the cap restraints Cleveland is projected to have in 2024, Chubb could be a cut candidate as he would count for only $4 million of dead cap. Another option could be asking him to re-work his deal to open up some much-needed salary cap space.

That is an issue the Browns will look to resolve in the offseason, as they are focused on making a playoff push in 2023. It is hard to imagine they would outright release Chubb, but the NFL can be a cruel business at times.
