Browns: Why Baker Mayfield will have an MVP-caliber season in 2020

1. Freddie Kitchens Is Not the Coach Anymore

Mayfield is entering his third year in the league and will be playing for his third head coach. That is not something that is easy to do. Luckily, he only had to deal with the horror of Hue Jackson for eight games. In 2019, it was a full season of Freddie Kitchens.

The hire did not make sense from the start. Kitchens had no prior head coaching experience and was barely qualified to be on a staff. That showed during his abysmal campaign in Cleveland. After a 6-10 season, there were talks that Kitchens might be back for a second chance, but there was no justifying that.

The Browns decided to let go of Kitchens and hired Vikings’ offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski as head coach. It seems as though every season there is a team hiring the offensive coordinator from Minnesota. The Browns better hope that Stefanski is better than Pat Shurmur. All we know is that without coaching a game, Stefanski is already better than Kitchens.

That goes for Mayfield as well. This is the No. 1 reason why Mayfield could have a big 2020. He is already a better player than he was in 2019 just by changing head coaches.

Stefanski took the job because he knows about the talent that this team has on offense. It is now his job to put it all together and develop a relationship with his young quarterback.
