There was a little bit of excitement surrounding the New York Giants heading into their season opener against the Minnesota Vikings at MetLife Stadium. This offseason was viewed as a solid one, as they addressed a few different needs on the roster.
The weapons offensively got a major upgrade with wide receiver Malik Nabers, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. In the trenches, the offensive line was revamped with the additions of Jermaine Eluemenor, Jon Runyan Jr. and Greg Van Roten.
Defensively, star edge rusher Brian Burns was acquired in a trade from the Carolina Panthers. Combined with fellow edge rusher Kevon Thibodeaux and defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, the trenches should be a strength for New York this season.
Unfortunately, their biggest need was not able to be addressed. General manager Joe Schoen did what he could to find a quarterback upgrade.
He explored trade possibilities in the NFL Draft to be in a position to select one of the top prospects but nothing came to fruition. That left Daniel Jones as the starter once again.
Heading into Year 6 of his career, he has done very little to prove that he is a franchise quarterback in the NFL. The supporting cast around him has been underwhelming a majority of his career, but he has not elevated the group consistently.
In the first season under Brian Daboll, he did help lead the team to the playoffs and a victory during Super Wild Card Weekend over the Vikings. But, the league has adjusted to the game plan New York used that season successfully.
Disappointingly, the Giants have been unable to come up with a counter. Jones’s struggles are a major reason for that as he cannot get the ball downfield even when he is given time in the pocket.
One statistic shows just how bad things have gotten for the Duke product. During the 2023 NFL offseason, he signed a four-year, $160 million contract. As shared by Josh Dubow of the Associated Press, he has thrown more touchdowns to the other team since inking that deal.
“Since signing a four-year, $160 million contract with Giants before last season, Daniel Jones has thrown more TD passes to the opposition (3 pick 6s) than to his own team (2 TD passes),” shared Dubow.
If Week 1 was an indication of things to come, the 2024 campaign is going to be a long one for the New York Giants.
