Detroit Lions defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson stirred up some intrigue with his recent comments regarding the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in anticipation of their upcoming playoff clash. Many speculators have suggested that his remarks may have been directed at Baker Mayfield.
“This group probably is one of the better groups we done faced all year, besides that Tampa group. If you give that Tampa group a good quarterback, that’s a great group.”
On a Wednesday afternoon, Mayfield fielded questions regarding Gardner-Johnson’s comments, and his response demonstrated the poise and wit he’s known for.
“I mean, I don’t think he’s really watched film because he mentioned Russell Gage. You know, we love Russell, but he hasn’t played a snap this year for us. He must be going off the preseason stuff the media was talking about but he didn’t play our first game so I’m excited to see him. I think he’s a really good player.”
Baker Mayfield is basking in the glow of a remarkable performance for the Buccaneers against the Eagles, during which he showcased his skills by throwing for an impressive 337 yards and tallying three touchdowns.
While the Lions managed to secure a victory against the Rams during Wild Card Weekend, their secondary encountered difficulties containing the duo of Matthew Stafford and Puka Nacua.
If they aspire to stymie Mayfield and the formidable Buccaneers, an improved defensive effort will undoubtedly be crucial, regardless of Gardner-Johnson’s perspective on Tampa Bay’s quarterback.
