Buccaneers’ Shaquil Barrett to sign franchise tender, file grievance

Earlier in the offseason, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers applied the nonexclusive franchise tag on Shaquil Barrett. That enabled him to negotiate with other NFL teams but the Bucs could match any offer.

Barrett informed the Buccaneers he intends to sign the franchise tender and remain in Tampa Bay for at least the 2020 season. It wasn’t always a lock that he would play under the franchise tag as he once referred to it as ‘about 50-50’ that he would.

There is still a need to sort out the designation of Barrett’s position for compensation purposes. He is set to earn $15.8 million since he’s considered an outside linebacker. By filing a grievance, he seeks to be designated as a defensive end to earn $19.316 million.

Regardless of the outcome of the grievance, it will result in a hefty raise for Barrett. He played on a one-year, $4 million deal last season that he signed after departing from the Denver Broncos.

It remains to be seen if both sides will come to an agreement on a long-term deal before the Wednesday deadline. With the uncertainty surrounding the NFL salary cap for 2021 due to Covid-19, it could be difficult for the Buccaneers to commit to a big deal right now.

Keeping Shaquil Barrett for the long-term is vital for the success of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ defense. He is coming off an incredible 2019 campaign that featured totals of 58 combined tackles (19 for loss), 19.5 sacks (league-most), 37 QB hits, and six forced fumbles.
